Abstract
Much work in Information Retrieval has focused on how to rank-order
documents returned as the result of a query. By contrast, my work has
emphasized finding new ways to present retrieval results to users in
compact and descriptive forms, making use both of statistical text
analysis and graphical user interfaces. I have recently been
examining issues related to the use of categories and clusters in the
grouping of retrieval results. These ideas will be illustrated via
some analyses of the usefulness of clustering retrieved documents, and
by the description of a novel prototype interface that integrates
large category hierarchies with query formulation and display of
retrieval results. These ideas will be placed within a larger
framework of information access and use as a dynamic, incremental
process.
