Abstract
Strong forces for change are affecting the federal funding of science and
engineering research. Premises for what sort of activity the government should
fund are being debated. The science and technology budget of some agencies is
increasing, while in others it is being reduced. The balance of the areas
being supported is changing. This talk will explore some of the changes taking
place with particular emphasis on the view from the Department of Defense, and
trends in the defense science and technology program that affect its future.
The speaker will highlight one Presidential initiative, the Next Generation
Internet, which is a new element of the research program of several agencies
that is cited for funding in the President's FY98 Budget Request.
