Abstract
The negentropy principle of information will be reviewed and applied
to communication using photons. In this context, Landauer's
interpretation of the Szilard engine, which converts information into
a decrease in entropy, will be discussed. The amount of information
transmitted by photons will be determined for various limiting cases.
Finally, a practical high bit-rate optical fiber communication system
performance will be presented and compared with the ideal limits.
